Why should I choose a Wing® saddle pad over a regular saddle pad?

Hartpury university research lecturers provided independent scientific evidence that the revolutionary HRP wings significantly reduced the pressure on a horses back when being ridden and in fact, there was no pressure at all behind the saddle over the lumbar spine. This evidence was in comparison to conventional saddle pads.

Pressure map during walk

A typical pressure map for walk can be seen below (figures 2 and 3) with mean peak pressures (mmHg) from the WING® pad on right (green) and the CONTROL pad on left (red) and on a time graph below with the same colours used. The pressure seen between the CONTROL pad and the horse can be clearly seen here. This pressure is not present between the WING® pad and the horse.

Pressure map during rising trot

A typical pressure map for rising trot can be seen below (figures 4 and 5) with mean peak pressures (mmHg) from the WING® pad on left (green) and the CONTROL pad on right (red). The pressure difference between the CONTROL pad and the horse can be clearly seen here. This pressure is not present between the WING® pad and the horse.

Pressure map during canter

A typical pressure map for canter can be seen below (figures 6 and 7) with mean peak pressures (mmHg) from the WING® pad on left (green) and the CONTROL pad on right (red) and on a time graph below with the same colours used. The value for the individual cells is also shown in figure 6. The same pressure pattern as in the walk and trot can be clearly seen here.

Conclusion

At all gaits the mean pressure between the HRP WING™ Saddle Pad and the horse behind the saddle, over the lumbar spinous processes was significantly less than the mean pressure between a conventional square saddle pad and the horse behind the saddle. During trot and canter the HRP WING™ Saddle Pad resulted in no pressure behind the saddle over the lumbar spinous processes.
